Box Score BEREA – Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) had a game-high 26 points, all in the first half, to lead the Mount Union men's basketball team to a 109-82 season opening and Ohio Athletic Conference win at Baldwin Wallace Friday night in Berea.
Gurley was one of five in double digits for the Purple Raiders as junior Braedon Poole (McDonald) had 17 points and nine rebounds while junior Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Jackson) had 116 points and freshmen Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) and Adam Chaney (Carrollton) each came of the bench with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Mount Union wins its 20th game in a row dating back to last season and the 109 points were the most for a Raider team since notching 117 in a 117-11 triple overtime win against Muskingum on February 8, 2017.
Anthony Mazzeo had 24 points to pace for Baldwin Wallace.
The Jackets had an early 13-11 lead but a Poole layup tied the game and sparked a 12-2 run that was capped by a Gurley three-pointer to give the Raiders a 25-15 lead with 13:21 left in the half. Gurley would then score 15 more points in half including four more three-pointers to give Mount Union a commanding 58-33 lead at the break.
Baldwin Wallace got no closer than 19 points the rest of the way as 14 different Mount Union players ended up scoring. The Raider bench out-scored the BW bench 41-22 for the game.
Mount Union and Baldwin Wallace meet again Saturday night at 6 p.m. at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
