Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Mount Union rallied but came up short falling at John Carroll 83-73 in overtime in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
The Purple Raiders (0-3, 0-3 OAC) got five three-pointers and a career-high 21 points off the bench from sophomore Kelsie Glass (Green) as Mount Union rallied from 11 down in the fourth quarter to force the extra period.
Senior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) added 15 and Anika Sweeney (Sylvania / Northview) had 11 as the other double digit scorers for Mount Union.
Nicole Heffington had a game-high 23 points and Dani Carlson scored seven of her 12 points in overtime to lead John Carroll (3-0, 3-0 OAC).
The first quarter featured six lead changes and a deep three pointer from Glass brought the Raiders within a point as they trailed 17-16 after the first quarter. The Blue Streaks out-scored Mount Unionl 23-11 in the second quarter and took a 40-27 lead at the break.
Mount Union rallied in the third quarter, opening the period on a 14-5 run and a Sweeney three-pointer with just at the 5:37 mark saw John Carroll with a 45-41 lead. The Blue Streaks pushed the lead back out to 11, 54-43 heading into the final quarter.
The Raiders kept up the pressure in the fourth quarter and pair of Glass free throws with 20 seconds to go gave the Raiders a 64-61 lead before Heffington hit a three to tie the game at 64-64 with nine seconds left in regulation.
Heffington hit a free throw to start the overtime period and John Carroll never trailed again pulling away for the 83-73 victory.
The same two teams meet against Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. in Alliance.
