ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 4 ranked Mount Union defeated Ohio Northern, 42-35, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.
Running back
Josh Petruccelli (Perry) ran in a one-yard touchdown run with 2:14 to play that gave Mount Union a 42-35 lead. Ohio Northern came back and drove to the Mount Union 30-yard line with a minute to play before Polar Bear quarterback Brody Hahn was intercepted in the end zone by
Derrick Bradley (Bradenton, Fla. / Palmetto) to seal the victory for the Raiders.
Mount Union ran out to a 20-6 lead midway through the second quarter as quarterback
Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla.) threw touchdown passes to Petruccelli and
Derrick Harvey, Jr. (Akron / Buchtel) while
DeAndre Parker (Crystal River, Fla.) had an 18-yard TD run.
Hahn then led Northern on a six-play, 75-yard drive, capped by an 18-yard pass to Chase Rose to bring the score to 20-14 at halftime. He engineered another 75-yard drive to start the second half and a Brock Martin one-yard TD run with a Dom DiFalco extra point gave Northern a 21-20 lead. Hahn extended the lead to 28-20 with a nine-yard pass to Austin Eick with 5:06 to go in the third quarter.
The Raiders answered just 45 seconds later with a 47-yard catch and run from Plunk to Harvey and Plunk scrambled for a two-point conversion to tie the game at 28-28 after three quarters.
Both teams traded scores in the first half of the fourth quarter as Plunk found
Tyrell Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike) from six yards for his fourth TD pass of the day while Hahn put together another 75-yard drive and ran in from nine yards to tie the game at 35-35 with 8:40 to play.
Mount Union then took 6:21 off the clock, Petruccelli had 10 carries for 45 yards, including the go ahead one-yard TD run, and Plunk completed passes to
Evan Weygandt (New Lenox, Ill. / Lincoln Way West) for 34 yards and a pass to Harvey for seven yards.
Plunk finished with 253 yards passes with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Parker ran for 71 yards with a score and Petruccelli finished with 51 yards and a score. Harvey had 66 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns.
Hahn threw for 326 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions for Ohio Northern (4-4, 3-3 OAC).
Aside from the Bradley interception at the end of the game, Mount Union (8-0, 7-0 OAC) got picks from
Malik Britt (Bossier City, La. / Airline),
Rossy Moore (Lima / Lima Central Catholic) and
Anthony Parker (Hinesville, Ga. / Liberty County).
Jesse Vail (Estero, Fla.) had 10 tackles for the Raiders on defense.
Mount Union stays home to host Muskingum in the regular season home finale Saturday, November 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
