WILMINGTON, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team, ranked No. 16 in the nation, picked up an 89-71 Ohio Athletic Conference matchup over Wilmington on Friday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (8-1, 3-1 OAC) had five players score in double figures, with sophomore
Christian Parker (Canton / Glenoak) leading the way with 24 points and eight rebounds on 11-of-15 shooting. Seniors
Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Jackson) and
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) added 20 and 17 respectively, with junior
Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Mary) and sophomore
Adam Chaney (Carrolton) each adding 11.
The Quakers (2-7, 0-4 OAC) were led by Obed Achirem who scored a team high 19 points.
Wilmington jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before a Stanislawski jumper sparked a 22-2 run over the next 5:24 to give the Raiders a 22-8 lead with 12:56 left in the first half. The Raiders continued to add to their lead over the next five minutes when back-to-back Stanislawski threes gave them a 27-point lead with 7:33 remaining in the half. A three by Painter got the lead up to 29 points with 1:53 remaining in the half. The Raiders would go on to take a 53-24 lead into the half.
The Quakers were able to cut the Raiders lead down to 20 with 10:18 remaining in the game, however that was the closest they would be able to get until a three in the closing seconds cut the lead to 18, giving the Raiders an 89-71 victory.
The Raiders outscored the Quakers 28-6 in fastbreak points.
The Raiders will return to action on Wednesday, December 29 for the Mount Union Holiday Classic as they will take on Geneva (Pa.) at 7 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio.
