Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio-- The No. 2 ranked Mount Union men's basketball team saw its 24-game winning streak snapped against Heidelberg losing 89-83 in overtime in a battle for first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference Friday night at the MAAC.
Mount Union (5-1, 5-1) was led by junior Braedon Poole (McDoanld) finishing with a double-double 20 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) also scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Freshman Christian Parker (Canton GlenOak) had a career-high 16 points for the Purple Raiders while juniors Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) and Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) scored double digits with 13 and 10 respectively.
Heidelberg (6-0, 6-0) was led by Dylan Woods with a game high 38 points.
Poole started the game off for the Purple Raiders scoring seven of the first eight. Mount Union grabbed a 18-8 lead off a 13-2 run sparked by two three-pointers by Newsom. Mount Union got its largest lead of the night on a Stanislawski layup to finish a 11-2 run giving the Raiders a 33-18 lead. Heidelberg would close the half on a 12-3 run with Mount Union leading 36-30.
The lead in the second half never got any larger than eight from Mount Union. In the final 5:30 of the second half there were seven lead changes and four ties with the final tie coming on a Gurley layup with six seconds remaining to tie the game up at 71.
Heidelberg had the first six points in overtime that being the difference as they outscored Mount Union 18-12 in period.
Mount Union heads to Tiffin tomorrow to play the second of the two-game series at 6 p.m.
