Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio -- The No. 2 ranked Mount Union men's basketball team bounced back after its first loss of the season last night with a 67-61 win at Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday at Seiberling Gymnasium.
The split of the weekend series leaves both teams tied for first place in the OAC at 6-1 while Marietta, the Purple Raiders opponent next weekend, stands at 5-1.
The Raiders were led on offense by junior Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) with 18 points. Junior Braedon Poole (McDonald) finished the night with a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Heidelberg got a game-high 20 points from Dylan Woods.
Gurley made his first two threes of the night helping Mount Union take a 17-3 six minutes into the game. A five-minute spurt in the middle of the first half saw freshman Adam Chaney (Carrolton) score five points and the Raiders go on a 15-7 run to take a 32-14 lead. Mount Union held the lead out to 18 ending the half leading 46-28.
Heidelberg started the second half on a 7-0 run but two quick layups by Parker gave Mount Union a 53-37 lead with 14:41 remaining. Heidelberg would take the lead on a 20-2 run in the second half leading 57-55. Mount Union responded with a 6-0 run on a made free throw from freshman Donovan Morris (Northfield Center / Walsh Jesuit), a three pointer from Gurley and a jumper from Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg). The Raiders connected on three free throws down the strecth to clinch the 67-61 win.
Mount Union next plays a two-game series with Marietta, who is half a game behind both Mount Union and Heidelberg, next weekend with a game Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at home followed by a game Saturday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. in Marietta.
