Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio -- Mount Union, ranked ninth in the nation, rallied late but fell 93-89 at Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday night at Ban Johnson Arena.
Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) had a game-high 25 points while Logan Hill (Massillon / Jackson) had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Braedon Poole (McDonald) had 18 points and 12 rebounds for a Mount Union squad that falls to 6-3 overall and 6-3 in the OAC.
Marietta (7-1, 7-1 OAC) got 22 points from Luke Islay and 19 from Mason Lydic.
There were a pair of lead changes in the first quarter before Marietta got out to a 13-8 lead. The Pioneers pushed that lead to as many as eight, 25-17 with 10:25 left before halftime. Mount Union rallied over the next four minutes scored 14 of the next 20 points to tie the game at 31-31. Islay would give Marietta back the lead on a jumper and the Raiders would tie the game three more times, the last of which at 39-39 on a Hill layup at the 2:21 mark. Mount Union would finish the period on an 8-4 run capped by an Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Jackson) three pointer to make it 47-44 Raiders at the break.
Mount Union opened the second half on a 6-2 run and a Hill layup with 18:22 to play gave the Raiders their largest lead of the game, 53-46. Marietta would then go on a 20-6 surge over the next six minutes to take a 66-59 lead with 12:13 left. The Raiders scored five straight points and a Gurley three-pointer got the Raiders within two, 66-64, but Marietta countered with nine-straight of its own and led 75-64 with just over eight minutes remaining. Mount Union would later be down 85-72 with 4:57 left before the Raiders rallied to within a bucket twice in the final minute as Islay hit four free throws to put the game away.
The Raiders finish the regular season next weekend with a series against Muskingum, playing Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in New Concord followed by a game Saturday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. in Alliance.
