Box Score NEW CONCORD, Ohio-- Mount Union men's basketball team outscored Muskingum 53-39 to pull away with a 91-74 Ohio Athletic Conference win Friday night at Performance Court.
Mount Union (7-3,7-3) had 10 scorers on the night including five with double-digits.
The Purple Raiders were led by junior Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) scoring a team-high 16 points all in the second half.
Sophomore Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent St. Marys) scored 13 points while juniors Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) and Braedon Poole (McDonald) finished with 12 and 11 respectively.
Freshman Adam Chaney (Carrollton) rounded out the double digit affair with 11 points on the night including a 9 for 10 night on the free throw line.
Muskingum (4-7, 4-7) got a game-high 17 points from Trey Singleton.
Gurley scored five early points to give Mount Union a 9-4 lead. A six-minute spurt saw the Purple Raiders go on an 18-4 run which saw eight different players scoring. Muskingum had a 9-0 run quickly after to bring the score to 27-25 with 6:03 remaining in the first half. Mount Union pushed its lead out to three at the half leading 38-35.
Mount Union and Muskingum kept the game within six for the first seven minutes of the second half until the Purple Raiders went on a 15-2 run to take a 62-48 lead with 10:43 remaining. Newsom scored 11 of his 16 points in the final 10 minutes to close the game out for Mount Union.
Mount Union connected on 13 free throws in the final five minutes and won the turnover battle with 10 compared to Muskingum's 18.
Mount Union welcomes Muskingum to Alliance tomorrow for senior night to play the second of the two-game series at 6 p.m
