Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio— No. 3 seed Mount Union was upset by No. 6 Muskingum 88-81 in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday at Timken Gymnasisum.
Mount Union got a game-high 26 points from junior Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) who became the 34th player in school history to score over 1,000 career points on a free throw with 5:12 left in the game.
Along with Gurley, junior Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) scored 14 and sophomore Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent St. Mary) scored 12 points for a Purple Raiders team that finished the season with an 8-4 record.
Muskingum (5-8) had five players in double figures led by 21 points from MJ Smith as the Muskies advance to Thursday semifinals at No. 5 seed Ohio Northern, which knocked off No. 4 seed John Carroll, 80-79.
Muskingum opened up the game with a 13-8 lead in the game's first six minutes before Mount Union responded with a 15-0 run that was finished off with a dunk from Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) to give the Raiders a 23-13 lead. A Painter layup with 4:19 left before halftime gave Mount Union a 30-18 lead but the Muskies finished the period on a 17-3 run to lead 35-33 at the break.
Three ties and a lead change highlighted the opening four minutes of the second half and the Muskies tied the game at 49-49 on a Carson Carter three and Muskingum retook the lead, 51-49 on an Alex Masinelli jumper with 13:35 to play. Over the next four minutes, the Muskies built a 15-point advantage to lead 66-51 on a Smith three. Mount Union rallied to get it the deficit down to five points, 83-78, when Gurley hit a three with 34 seconds remaining. Muskingum hit five free throws the rest of the way to put the game away.
