MARIETTA, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team, ranked No. 14 in the nation, lost 84-59 at No. 8 ranked Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday night at Ban Johnson Arena.
The Raiders (10-2, 4-2 OAC) had three players score in double figures led by senior
Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Jackson) with 19 points.
Sophomore
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) added 15 and senior
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) had 10 for Mount Union.
The Pioneers (11-2, 7-0 OAC) were led by Jason Ellis who scored a game-high 20 points while Brennen Crawford added 14.
The Raiders and Pioneers traded baskets over the first five minutes of the first half, when a Poole three-pointer gave the Raiders an 11-8 lead with 15 minutes to go in the half.
The Pioneers answered, going on a 9-3 run over the next 3:54 to take a 17-14 lead. Mount Union took back the lead off back-to-back threes by Parker and junior
Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Mary). Both teams would go on to trade baskets over the next several minutes before the Pioneers were able to go on an 8-3 run to take a 38-30 lead with just 32 seconds remaining in the half. A Stanislawski three at the buzzer cut the margin to five, giving the Pioneers a 38-33 lead at the break.
The Raiders opened the second half on a quick 5-0 run to tie the game at 38 with 18:51 remaining in the game. However, the Pioneers answered with an 8-3 run of their own to take a 46-41 lead with 17:05 to go. Then, with 15:46 to go in the game a turn-around jumper by Sahmi Willoughby sparked a 22-1 run over the next 10 minutes to give the Pioneers a 68-46 lead with 6:22 remaining in the game. Mount Union got no closer than 18 points the rest of the way as Marietta went on to the 84-59 victory.
The Raiders are back in action Saturday, January 15 at 4 p.m. against Otterbein at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
