Alyssa Kasaris Hits 2,000 Digs; Raiders Fall In OAC Quarterfinals

MARIETTA, Ohio – No. 5 seed Mount Union fell to No. 4 seed Marietta, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament Tuesday night at the Ban Johnson Arena.
 
Senior libero Alyssa Kasaris (North Royalton) became the fourth Mount Union player to reach 2,000 digs in her career as she hit that mark in the first set. Kasaris had a team-high 27 digs reaching 2,018 digs in her career.
 
The Purple Raiders, 19-8 overall, won the first set 25-20 before dropping the next three 22-25, 19-25 and 20-25. The Pioneers, 19-8 overall, advance to Thursday's quarterfinal match against No. 1 seed Otterbein.
 
The Raiders were led on offense by senior Maria Ellesin (Alliance / Marlington) with 14 kills. Sophomores Darby Leininger (Chardon / Beaumont) and Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) both had double digit kills with 12 and 10.
 
Senior setters Mollie Thomas (Massillon / Massillon Perry) and Katie May (Brecksville / Independence) finished the game with 21 and 19 assists.
 
Thomas finished with 23 digs while sophomore Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) had 20.
 
The first set went the way of Mount Union as they had 19 kills with just seven errors and Marietta had 10 kills with five errors.
 
Marietta took control of the second set with 18 kills and just three errors while while Mount Union hit well with 16 kills and five errors.
 
The third set saw both teams hit over .200 as Marietta came away with the win having one less errors than the Raiders and four more kills.
 
The fourth set went the way of Marietta as they hit .256 percent this time with 16 kills and six errors while Mount Union had 11 kills  and six hitting errors.
