Men's Basketball: No. 7 Raiders Cruise Past Maryville

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 7 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team beat Maryville 99-75 on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (2-0) had four players score in double figures with senior Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) leading the way with a game-high 20 points, senior Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) added in 14 points of his own, with seniors Jeffrey Mansfield (Wilmington) and Braedon Poole (McDonald) scoring 12 and 11 respectively to round out the Raiders double digit scorers.

The Scots (2-1) were led by Charlie Cochran who scored a team-high 17, with Myles Rasnick and RJ Simmons each scoring 13 points.
Mount Union and Maryville would trade baskets over the first three minutes before a lay in by Poole sparked a quick 8-2 run to give the Raiders an 18-10 lead with 14:54 remaining in the first half. Then, a little over three minutes later a three-pointer by Gurley would spark a massive 30-10 run for Mount Union over the final 11:47 of the half and gave them a 50-26 lead heading into the break.

The Scots would open the second half with a quick 11-5 run to cut the lead down to 20 with 17:18 left in the game, but that is the closest they would be able to get as the Raiders would go on to win 99-75.

Mount Union shot 53.7-percent from the field, including 45.8-percent from three and held Maryville to just 38-percent shooting from the field and 29.4-percent from three-point range.
