Raiders Use Balance In Season Opening Win Over Geneva

ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's basketball team kicked off the season with an 89-75 win over Geneva Wednesday night at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
 
Mount Union used it depth as it had 11 different scorers including five freshman.
 
Seniors Emma Cannon (Dalton) and Gretchen Koken (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) led the Purple Raiders (1-0). Cannon had 18 points while Koken picked up her first career double-double with career highs in points and rebounds scoring 16 and grabbing 12.  
 
Sophomore Ali Hudik (Mentor / Lake Catholic) scored a career-high 13 points while freshman Audrey Livesay (Akron / Revere) picked up 10 points.
 
Freshman Mckayala Dunkle (Cadiz / Harrison Central) grabbed nine rebounds while sophomore Hailey Haywood (Barberton) finished with eight rebounds. On the defensive side freshman duo Bailey Shutsa (Wadsworth / Norton) and Halle Ignacio (Canton / Massillon Jackson) had six and four steals.
 
Leading Geneva (0-1) with a double-double was Mia San Nicholas scoring 18 and picking up 10 rebounds.
 
Hudik scored the first five points of the game to give Mount Union a 5-0 lead. Geneva got within two as the score was 5-3 but a 10-0 run which included a jumper from Koken and Canon and a three from Livesay and Haywood opened a 15-3 lead for the Raiders. Mount Union pushed the first quarter lead out to 28-14 after the first quarter.
 
An Ignacio three and Cannon jumper started the second quarter giving Mount Union a 33-14 lead. Geneva responded with two three pointers of its own to close the gap to 13 but another run this time 17-4 for Mount Union to end the quarter pushed the lead out to 50-24.
 
Geneva started the third quarter with a 10-0 run to get within 16 with the score being 50-34. Mount Union kept the lead to 12 or larger in the quarter as Koken ended the quarter scoring the final five Raider points to take a 67-53 lead into the final quarter.
 
Geneva got within 13 just once in the final quarter as Mount Union got its largest second half lead of 25 on a bucket from freshman Sierra Schlosser (Galloway / Bishop Ready) hitting a layup. Geneva tried to make a comeback getting within 13 again but with just one minute left Mount Union finished the game off winning 89-75.
 
Mount Union now travels to New Wilmington, Pa. taking on Manchester (Ind.) in the Teammates For Life Tip-off Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m.
