ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 5 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team beat Wilmington 96-69 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (8-1, 3-1 OAC) had four player score in double figures, with senior
Jeffery Mansfield (Wilmington) leading the way with a game-high 14 points. Seniors
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) and
Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Mary) both scored 13 points and junior
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) rounded out the Raiders in double figures
with 11 points.
The Quakers (3-6, 0-4 OAC) were led by Abdul Kanu who scored a team high 13 points.
Wilmington jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 15:18 remaining in the first half, however Mount Union would answer with a 13-4 run over the next 3:41 to claim a 15-11 lead with just over ten minutes to play in the half. The Raiders would stretch their lead to seven off a three-pointer from senior
Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Mount Union would then go on an 11-3 run over the next 3:13 of game time to take their biggest lead of the game and take a 49-32 lead into halftime.
The Raiders would then stretch their lead out to 19 over the first five minutes of the second half and the Quakers wouldn't be able to get closer than 13 over the final 15 minutes of play, as Mount Union would go on to win 96-69.
The Raiders return to action on Wednesday, December 28 at 5 p.m. when they take on Lebanon Valley in the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.
