ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team, ranked No. 8 in the nation defeated John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference Quarterfinal matchup 93-65 on Tuesday Night.
The Purple Raiders (22-3, 14-3 OAC) had five players score in double figures, with sophomore
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) leading the way with 21 points. Seniors
Braedon Poole (McDonald) and
Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Jackson) added 15 and 13 respectively. While senior
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) scored 12 points and junior
Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Mary) added 11.
The Blue Streaks (8-16, 2-13 OAC) were led by Jackson Sartain who scored a team high 17 points and PJ Flannery who scored 16.
Mount Union jumped out to a 14-4 lead with 13:25 remaining in the first half. John Carroll would cut the lead down to six before a layup by junior
Andrew Keller (Painesville / Riverside) sparked a 14-0 run over the next 4:23 that would stretch the Raider lead to 20 with 8:11 to play in the first half. The Blue Streaks would answer going on a 15-6 over the next 5:32 to cut the lead to 34-23 with 2:39 remaining in the first half. Mount Union would end the half on a 6-2 run to take a 40-25 lead into the half.
John Carroll was never able to get closer than 14 for the remainder of the game as the Raiders would go on to win 93-65.
The Raiders will host Heidelberg on Thursday, February 24 at 7 p.m. in an OAC Semifinal matchup at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
