Raiders Sweep Denison

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Denison in a double header on Tuesday evening, winning game one 8-0 in five innings and winning game two 8-1.

The Purple Raiders (9-9) struck first in the bottom of the first inning when a triple from freshman Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.) scored freshman Adri George (Eastlake / North) and senior Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley). Senior Hanna Ingram (Stow) added to the Mount Union lead when she hit a single that scored Bish. The Raiders added four more runs in the third to extend their lead to 7-0. An RBI single from junior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) gave Mount Union an 8-0 lead and would end the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Junior Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) pitched all five innings for the Raiders giving up zero runs on three hits and she struck out four to pick up her second win of the season.

In game two the Mount Union bats stayed hot as they put up three runs in the first inning coming off RBIs from senior Alyssa Rose (Madison) and George, along with a sacrifice fly from Ingram.

The Big Red (4-7) got on the board in the top half of the second coming off a sacrifice fly from Abby Arabia. The Raiders added to their lead in the bottom of the second when Heath hit an RBI triple that scored senior Savannah Miner (Louisville) and then Guspyt hit a sacrifice fly to score Heath, giving Mount Union a 5-1 lead. Ingram hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to extend the Raider lead to 7-1. Mount Union would add one more run in the bottom of the fourth and go on to win 8-1.

Senior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) picked up her third win on the season, pitching a complete game, giving up just one run on five hits and struck out three.

The Raiders open up Ohio Athletic Conference play next, taking on Heidelberg on Saturday, March 26 in a double header with game one starting at 1 p.m. and game two following at 3 p.m. in Tiffin, Ohio.
