AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Mount Union's baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season in first two games in Florida with 4-3 and 7-3 victories over Lakeland (Wis.) Friday at Lake Myrtle Park.
Mount Union (2-3) got a walk-off sacrifice fly RBI from
Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) to send the Purple Raiders to a 4-3 extra inning win in game one.
The Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead as
Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) had an RBI triple in the second, then in the fifth
Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) had a sacrifice fly RBI and
Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) had an RBI double.
Lakeland (0-2) tied the game with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh and score stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth.
Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison) led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a hit by pitch, then Lakeland intentially walked another to load the bases. Nave was lifted for pinch runner
Andrew Witte (Mentor), who scored the winning run on Mazza's fly out.
Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike) struck out 12 over the first six innings in his first start of the season.
Jeremy Sassano (Fairview Park / Fairview) struck out six more over the final three innings to get his first win of the season.
In the night cap, Mount Union got the bats going early again as Marlowe and
Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) both hit solo home runs in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.
Lakeland got one back in the second but the Raiders put three more on the board in the fourth on a Stauffer RBI single then two more scoring on a passed ball to give Mount Union a 5-1 lead.
Nave had an RBI single in the sixth, Lakeland tried to rally with two in the sixth but Mount Union had another in the seventh on a Schilling RBI single for the 6-3 final.
Carson Davis (Louisville) struck out eight to get the win while
Dan Zelina (Mentor) worked a clean seventh to pick up his first save of the season.
Mount Union is back in action tomorrow morning at 9:15 a.m. against Grove City (Pa.)
