CLERMONT, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team defeated Alfred (N.Y.) 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (4-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning coming off a sacrifice from senior
Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley), a two-run RBI double from senior
Hanna Ingram (Stow) and an RBI single from freshman
Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.).
The Saxons (0-1) would answer with two runs of their own in the top half of the second to cut the Mount Union lead down to 4-2. The Raiders added another run in the bottom of the second when freshman
Paige Gerring (Mogadore) scored after an error by Alfred's second baseman.
Alfred would score two runs in the third and one in the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead, before Ingram would drive in two more runs on a double to right center in the bottom of the fourth giving the Raiders a 7-6 lead. Neither team would be able to score again after the fourth inning and Mount Union would go on to win 7-6.
Senior
Alyssa Rose (Madison) picked up her second win of the season pitching a complete game. She gave up six runs, three earned on three hits and struck out six.
The Raiders return to action on Tuesday, March 8, they will play two games taking on Roanoke (Va.) at 10 a.m. followed by Saint Benedict (Minn.) at 12:15 p.m. in Clermont, Fla.
