ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball dropped both games of a double header in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against Ohio Northern, losing game one 3-2 and game two 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (8-6, 4-0 OAC) struck first in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, their first run came off an RBI single by Hannah Rubel, the second run scored after Sydney Motylinski drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The Purple Raiders (11-13, 1-3 OAC) answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second when junior
Alexis Temple (Mentor) hit an RBI double that scored freshman
Sami Swartz (Columbus / Grandview Heights). Ohio Northern added a run in the top half of the fourth to extend their lead to 3-1. Freshman
Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.) hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Polar Bear lead down to 3-2, but Mount Union couldn't score in the seventh inning and would fall 3-2.
Junior
Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) got the start in the circle for the Raiders giving up three runs, two earned on five hits and striking out two in 3.1 innings. Senior
Alyssa Rose (Madison) would come in to pitch 3.2 innings of relief, giving up just one hit and striking out four.
The Polar Bears scored first again in game two, scoring in the top half of the second off an RBI single from Rachel Hish. The Raiders would tie the game at one in the bottom of the second when an RBI single from Temple scored Bish. Ohio Northern would add two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Mount Union would cut the lead down to a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when senior
Hanna Ingram (Stow) hit a sacrifice fly to center field and scored senior
Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley). The Polar Bears would go on to score two more in the top of the sixth inning and go on to win 5-3.
Senior
Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) started in the circle for Mount Union and gave up five runs, two earned on five hits and struck out five in six innings. Senior
Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) would come in to pitch the final inning for the Raiders, giving up zero runs and zero hits.
The Raiders travel to New Concord, Ohio on Tuesday, April 5 to take on Muskingum in an OAC matchup, with game one of the double header starting at 3 p.m. and game two following at 5 p.m.
