Raiders Sweep Marietta in OAC Play

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Marietta in a doubleheader in Ohio Athletic Conference play, winning game one 13-1 and taking game two 11-6 on Wednesday evening.

The Pioneers (11-19, 5-9 OAC) struck first in game one scoring a run in the top of the first inning when Jess Brown hit an RBI single. The Purple Raiders (17-16-1, 7-6-1 OAC) would answer with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The first three came after three straight walks with the bases loaded drawn by freshman Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.), sophomore Michaela Folks (Wooster) and senior Savannah Miner (Louisville). The next three came off an RBI triple from senior Isabella Sherban (Alliance / St. Thomas Aquinas) that drove in Folks, Miner and freshman Adri George (Eastlake / North) to give Mount Union a 6-1 lead.

The Raiders would add to their lead in the bottom half of the fourth, when George hit an RBI single that brought home senior Alyssa Rose (Madison). Then, Folks drew another walk that brought home senior Hanna Ingram (Stow), then Sherban hit an RBI single down the right field line that scored Bish and freshman Madi Bidinger (Wadsworth). Junior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) hit an RBI triple that brought home Sherban and Folks. The final run of the inning came after senior Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) hit an RBI single that scored Heath to give Mount Union a 13-1 victory.

Rose got the start in the circle for the Raiders and gave up one run on three hits and struck out seven in four innings. Senior Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) came in and pitched the final inning and gave up zero runs on zero hits.

Mount Union struck first in game two scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the first came off a solo home run from Rose. Then, George hit a sacrifice that scored freshman Sami Swartz (Columbus / Grandview Heights), the final run came off an RBI double from Miner.

Marietta would answer with four runs of their own in the fifth inning the first came off a solo home run from Rachel Kazmirski. The next three came off RBIs from Anna Swierczewski and Micaela Bradley to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead. The Raiders would answer with five runs in the bottom half of the inning with RBIs coming from Heath, Guspyt, Bish and George.

The Pioneers would cut into the lead in the sixth inning after Swierczewski reached first on an error and Kazmirski scored to cut the lead down to 8-5. Mount Union would add three more to their lead in the bottom of the sixth off a two-run home run from Rose and an RBI single from Miner. Marietta would be able to score one run in the top of the seventh, but the Raiders would go on to win 11-6.

Bosse got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up zero runs on one hit and struck out one in two innings. Senior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) came in to pitch two innings of relief and gave up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Rose would come in to pitch the final three inning and gave up three runs, two earned on six hits and struck out four.

The Raiders hit the road next to take on Baldwin Wallace on Saturday, April 23 for an OAC doubleheader, game one will begin at 1 p.m., with game two following at 3 p.m. in Berea, Ohio.
