Raiders Drop Two in OAC Play

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Baldwin Wallace in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, losing game one 14-12 and dropping game two 9-5.

The Yellow Jackets (25-6, 11-3 OAC) struck first in game one when Alex Ludwick hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Purple Raiders (17-12, 8-6 OAC) would answer with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first, the first came off an RBI single from junior Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) that scored junior Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic). The next three runs came off a three-run home run from senior Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) to give Mount Union a 4-2 lead.

Baldwin Wallace would cut into the lead in the third inning when Luke Vonderhaar hit a solo home run. The Yellow Jackets would retake the lead in the top of the fourth inning when Vonderhaar hit a two-RBI single to take a 5-4 lead. The Raiders would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the fourth with two runs coming off RBIs from Mazza and senior Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark).

Baldwin Wallace would go on to score five runs over the next two innings to take a 10-6 lead with RBIs coming from Bryce Holt, Mark Mahnickey, Vincent Capolupo and Bijan Kamalipour. Mount Union would cut into the lead in the sixth inning when Duliba hit a sacrifice fly that brought home senior Brain Livolsi (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township).

The Yellow Jackets would add to their lead in the top of the eighth inning scoring four runs off RBIs from Mohnickey and Capolupo to take a 14-7 lead. Mount Union would rally in the eighth and ninth innings scoring five runs, the first came off a solo home run from Mazza. The next three came off RBIs from senior Chad Szydlowski (Twinsburg), Mazza and Duliba, the final run came when senior Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) scored off a wild pitch. The rally would ultimately fall short and Baldwin Wallace would go on to win 14-12.

Gallant got the start on the hill for the Raiders giving up eight runs, six earned on ten hits and striking out three in five innings. Senior Ryan Osman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Moon) would come in to pitch 2.2 innings in relief giving up five runs, three earned on five hits and striking out three. Senior Nolan Hassel (North Royalton) came in and gave up one run on one hit in 0.1 innings of relief. Senior Dan Zelina (Mentor) came in to pitch the final inning and gave up zero runs on one hit.

Mount Union would strike first in game two when Gallant hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets would answer in the top of the second scoring six runs off of RBIs from Mohnickey, Capolupo, Ludwick and Vonderhaar to take a 6-2 lead. The Raiders would cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Mazza hit an RBI single that scored sophomore Jaired Lehman (Moroeville, Pa. / Gateway).

Mount Union would then trim the lead down to two in the fourth inning when senior Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) hit an RBI double that scored freshman Alex Stegman (Berea / Berea-Midpark). Baldwin Wallace would add to the lead in the seventh inning scoring three runs off RBIs from Drew Wilson, Ryan Guggenheim and Holt to take a 9-4 lead. The Raiders would answer with a run in the bottom half of the seventh off an RBI from Schilling that scored Duliba but would fall 9-5.

Senior Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) got the start for Mount Union giving up seven runs, six earned on six hits and striking out four in six innings. Junior Jeremy Sassano (Fairview Park / Fairview) came in and pitched 0.1 innings of relief giving up two runs on two hits. Senior Cole Robinson (Lewis Center / Olentangy) would come in to pitch the final 2.2 innings giving up zero runs on two hits and striking out one.

The Raiders hit the road next to take on Wooster on Tuesday, April 26 at 4 p.m. in Wooster, Ohio.
