WOOSTER, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team lost a non-conference game to Wooster 13-5 on Tuesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (17-13) struck first with a run in the top of the first when senior
Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) hit an RBI single that scored senior
Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve).
The Fighting Scots (21-9) would tie the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Dane Camphausen hit a solo home run down the right field line. Mount Union would reclaim the lead in the top of the sixth off a two RBI single from sophomore
Andrew Mekeal (Cuyahoga Falls / Woodridge) that brought home senior
Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) and Gallant to take a 3-1 lead.
Wooster would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Dean Brown hit a two RBI single that scored Eli Westrick and Ben Gbur to tie the game at three. The Raiders would reclaim the lead in the top of the seventh inning when Duliba hit an RBI that scored senior
Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison). The Scots would take their first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh coming off a two-run home run from Gbur to take a 5-4 lead.
Wooster would add to their lead in the eighth inning scoring eight runs, with RBIs coming from Dominic Stilliana, Ben Hines, Tyler Chumita, Westrick and Camphausen. Mount Union would score a run in the top of the ninth inning to cut into the lead when Duliba hit an RBI single that brought home junior
Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic), but Wooster would go on to win the game 13-5.
Sophomore
Chuck Hawley (Mentor) got the start on the mound for the Raiders and gave up three runs on five hits, while striking out five in 5.2 innings. Senior
Collin Skufca (Wooster) would come in to pitch 1.1 innings of relief, giving up three runs on three hits. Senior
Dan Zelina (Mentor) gave up five runs on two hits and recorded one strike out in 0.2 innings of relief. Senior
Thomas Yuras (Mentor) would come in to pitch the final 0.1 innings for Mount Union and gave up two runs on two hits and stuck out one.
The Raiders return home tomorrow to take on Wooster in a non-conference matchup at Rafeld-Rogers Field in Alliance, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
