ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team split its final non-conference doubleheader on senior day against Case Western Reserve dropping game one 5-2 and winning game two 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (21-16) finished with six hits in game one and had two players with multiple hits. Senior
Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) and junior
Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) both getting two hits.
Mount Union would strike first in game one scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the first coming off an RBI single from Shilling that brought home junior
Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic). Then, senior
Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) had a sacrifice fly to right field scoring senior
Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) to take a 2-0 lead.
Case Western Reserve (23-17) got a run back in the top of the second scoring on a passed ball. Case got some more offense in the fifth scoring on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Case took the lead in the sixth inning on a single to center field scoring two runners taking a 4-2 lead. Case Western added one more run in the seventh inning to take the 5-2 victory in game one.
Senior
Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) started game two for the Raiders pitching four innings only giving up one run. Senior
Ryan Osman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Moon) came in for the final five innings getting the victory allowing three runs and striking out four batters.
Mount Union was led by Mazza's two RBI's in the second game with six different Raiders getting a hit each.
Case struck first in the top of the fifth on a fielders choice. Mount Union responded with four runs in the fifth inning. First a single from sophomore
Jaired Lehman (Toronto / Edison) scored senior
Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial), then a double from Mazza scored Lehman and senior
Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison), the final run of the inning came from a Duliba single to left center scoring Mazza.
Mount Union then added another run on when Weaver reached base on a throwing error scoring Schilling. Case scored two runs in the seventh inning on singles. In the ninth inning Case scored a run and had the tying run on third base and leading run on first base but Osman struck the final batter out looking.
The Raiders are on the road again next traveling to New Concord, Ohio on Sunday, May 8 to take on Muskingum in the finale of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season, with game one beginning at 1 p.m. and game two following at 4 p.m.
