ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union men's soccer team won, 3-2, over Defiance in the opening game of its home invitational on Saturday.
Purple Raider senior
Omar Najjar (Akron / Revere) scored the first goal of the game and the first of his career off a penalty kick in the 36
th minute, which ended up being the only goal of the first half.
Defiance (0-1-2) tied things up to start the second half with a goal from Chase Stiner in the 52
nd minute.
Mount's graduate student
Rylan Wikle's (Olmsted Falls / Olmsted Falls) goal in 75
th minute (assisted by junior
Adam Kalvitz (Avon / Avon)) was answered by the Yellow Jackets three minutes later and the score was knotted up at 2.
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Raider junior
Jamon McCort (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) netted the game-winner from 15 yards out to upper right corner of the net. Kalvitz had his second-straight clutch pass.
Mount outshot Defiance 38-6, including 13-3 on-goal. The Raiders also had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Raider senior goalie
Mikey Contreras (Fremont / Fremont Ross) earned the complete-game win with one save on the day.
Mount (2-1-1) will play the winner between Penn State Behrend and Waynesburg tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the championship game.
