ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union men's volleyball team won in straight sets against the Illinois Tech Hawks 25-18, 25-16, and 25-22 Friday night at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders (3-1) were led by seniors Cameron Ternet (Canal Fulton/Massillon Jackson) with a game-high 13 kills on .360 hitting percentage and Luke Trzeciak (Cranberry/Seneca Valley) with 8 kills.
Freshman Louden Heldt (Phoenix, Az./O'Connor) helped the Raiders to victory with 5 kills while adding two solo and one assisted block.
Sophomore Will Heeney (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit) recorded another game with 26 assists. Sophomore Aaron Armour (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) led Mount Union with 9 digs followed by Trzeciak and Ternet with six digs a piece.
Illinois Tech (1-4) was led Michael Makrevych with nine kills on the night. Riley Laite finished with seven kills and Grant Couper finished with six.
Elijah Johnson led the Hawks in assists with 26.
In the first set, the Purple Raiders had nine kills on four hitting errors while Illinois Tech had 10 kills but nine hitting errors as Mount Union won the first set 25-18.
In the second set, Mount Union improved to 11 kills on four hitting errors. Illinois Tech had seven kills with five hitting errors. Finding their groove in the set, the Raiders won 25-16.
In the third and final set, the Raiders recorded 12 kills on just four hitting errors while Illinois Tech had 15 kills on nine hitting errors. In a close set, the Raiders would finish on top to win 25-22.
Mount Union will continue to play in the Raider Rumble as they take on Thiel, who lost to Illinois Tech 3-0 on Friday night, Saturday at 2 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
