ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's volleyball team defeated Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup in three sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-12) Saturday afternoon at the Timken Gymnasium on senior day.
Mount Union (17-6, 5-2 OAC) honored its three seniors,
Adrian Petrisko (Elyria),
Maddie Wentz (Broadview Heights / Akron Hoban), and
Katie Guerra (Avon Lake) before the game. With the win Mount Union clinched a playoff spot in the OAC tournament as well.
The Purple Raiders were led by junior middle hitter
Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) with 11 kills hitting .556% with five blocks. Sophomore outside hitter
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) finished 8 kills while Wentz had seven kills on a .750 hitting percent.
Freshman setter
Melissa Hansen (Hudson) and junior setter
Casey Kildow (Bethesda / Union Local) led the team in assists with 20 and 18 individually. While Guerra led the team with a total of 3 aces.
Freshman libero
Averi Haley (Orrville) led the Purple Raiders in digs with 15 digs and junior outside hitter
Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) had 9 digs.
Wilmington (9-13, 1-6 OAC) was led by Sarah Brown with 5 kills, Kaileigh Schneberger with 16 assists, and Emma Schroer with 9 digs.
SET 1
The Raiders were able to take the lead early in the set with a 5-1 scoring run, with Mercer leading the run, to take the lead 12-5. Later on in the set, the Raiders were able to go on a 6-3 scoring run, led by four kills from Wentz which secured the set 25-13.
SET 2
Wilmington bounced back from the previous set going on a 7-3 run taking the lead early in the second set 8-4. Mount Union was determined to bounce back going on a 6-0 scoring run, with Mercer leading the run, to take the lead 12-10. Mount Union went on a 7-1 scoring run ending with an ace from Guerra and took the set 25-16.
SET 3
Wilmington was able to get the first point of the set, but the Raiders were quick to answer the point with a 4-0 run. The Raiders went on an 8-2 scoring run, led by Mercer, in the set to take the lead 14-7. The Raiders were able to keep their lead for the rest of the set with a 7-2 scoring run finishing off the set with a kill from Wentz to win the set 25-12.
Mount Union stays at home for OAC play on Wednesday, October 25th taking on John Carroll at 7 p.m.
