Women's Volleyball: Raiders Take Care of OAC Play in Four Set Victory Over Heidelberg

ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's volleyball team defeated Heidelberg in four sets (25-11, 25-10, 23-25, 25-13) Saturday afternoon at the Timken Gymnasium.
 
The Purple Raiders (14-4, 2-1 OAC) were led by junior outside hitter Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) with 12 kills and junior middle hitter Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) with 10 kills.
 
Junior setter Casey Kildow (Bethesda / Union Local) and freshman setter Melissa Hansen (Hudson) and led the team in assists with 16 and 15 respectively.
 
Freshman libero Averi Haley (Orrville) led the Raiders in digs with 16 while Bartell and senior defensive specialist Adrian Petrisko (Elyria) each had double digit digs with 15 and 13.
 
Heidelberg (12-10, 1-2 OAC) was led by Lexi Evak with 7 kills, Maddie Reed with 11 assists, and Nicole Thomas with 14 digs.
 
In the first set Mount Union came out hot getting the first point of the set with a kill from Meyer. Mount Union and Heidelberg battled back-and-forth with scoring runs for each team. Mount Union eventually secured a lead with a 9-0 scoring run, led by Meyer and Leininger to make the score 22-9. Mount Union came out victorious taking the first set 25-11 with 12 kills and two blocks throughout the set.
 
The second set went the same way for the Raiders coming out strong with a 3-0 lead. Heidelberg was able to get some points, but the Raiders came back with a 5-0 scoring run to take a lead and make the score 12-4. Later in the set, Mount Union went on an 11-1 scoring run, led by Meyer and Leininger again to end the set 25-10.
 
The third set was no different for Mount Union coming out with a 5-0 run led by Bartell. Heidelberg was able to stay in the set and went on a 4-1 scoring run to make the score 9-6 with Mount Union still in the lead. Mount Union and Heidelberg battled it out until Heidelberg was able to go on a 7-0 scoring run making the score 19-19. Heidelberg was able to finish strong taking the third set 25-23.
 
In the fourth set the Raiders set the tone again with a 5-1 lead. Heidelberg and Mount Union battled back-and-forth until Mount Union was able to 4-0 scoring run to make the score 17-7. Heidelberg answered with a 4-0 run or themselves making the score 19-13, but Mount Union was able to finish the set on a 6-0 run led by Bartell to win the fourth set 25-13.
 
Mount Union will stay home to take on Marietta for OAC play on Tuesday October 10th with a 7 p.m. start time.
