ST. PETE, Fla. – The No. 13 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team beat Berea 93-64 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (9-1) had three players score in double figures with senior
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) leading the way with a season and a game-high 25 points. Seniors
Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) and
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) added in 11 and 10 points respectively to round out the Raiders in double digits.
The Mountaineers (4-6) were led by Trey Minter who scored a team-high 16 points and Demetris Phillips who added in 11 points.
Mount Union jumped out to an early 9-2 lead over the first four minutes of the game. The Raiders would push that lead out to 13 over the next five and a half minutes before Berea would answer with a 10-0 run to cut the lead down to 21-18 with 7:10 remaining in the first half. Mount Union would respond with a 15-6 run of their own over the final 6:45 of the first half to take a 38-24 lead into the halftime break.
The Raiders would open the second half on a 14-1 run over the first 2:35 of the half to push their lead out to 52-25. The Mountaineers would respond with a 12-4 run of their own to cut the lead down to 17 with 12:38 remaining in the game. That's as close as Berea would get however, as Mount Union would go on to win 93-64.
The Raiders wrap up their Florida trip tomorrow at 5 p.m. against Saint John's at Eckerd College in St. Pete.
