ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 4 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Muskingum 94-63 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday night.
The Purple Raiders (22-2, 15-2 OAC) had four players score in double figures, with senior
Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) leading the way with a game-high 18 points. Junior
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) added in 16 points and seniors
Jeffery Mansfield (Wilmington) and
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) scored 15 and 13 respectively to round out the Raiders in double figures.
The Fighting Muskies (1-23, 1-16 OAC) were led by Noah Begue who scored a team-high 17 points.
Muskingum opened the game with back-to-back threes to take an early 6-0 lead and would maintain their lead over the first nine minutes of action. A hook shot by Parker with 10:22 remaining in the first half sparked a massive 18-3 run over the next 4:20 that saw Mount Union take a 33-24 lead with just over six minutes to play in the half. The Raiders and Muskies would trade baskets over the next couple of minutes before Mount Union would close the half on an 11-2 run to take a 48-32 lead into the half.
The Raiders would open the second half on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 23 and the Muskies wouldn't get closer than 21 for the remainder of the game as Mount Union would go on to win 94-63.
The Raiders are home again next when they host Otterbein on Saturday, February 18 at 2 p.m. for their regular season finale.
