NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Mount Union baseball team continued its undefeated start of the 2023 season with a 5-3 win at Westminster in a non-conference game on Sunday.
Mount (3-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Sophomore
Joe Lenart (Cleveland, Ohio / Garfield Heights) connected on a two-run single with two outs in the first, followed by RBIs by each junior
Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) and sophomore
Alex Stegman (Berea, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) in the third. Westminster (0-1) scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to make it a one-run game (4-3). Lenart responded by finishing how he started with a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning – the first homer of his career.
First-year
Leo Fornara (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) earned the win on the mound for the Raiders, pitching six innings and only giving up one earned run off four hits and striking out four. Mount junior
Andrew Witte (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) went a game-high 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Raiders will next head to Florida to compete in the Russ Matt Invitational. First up will be a doubleheader vs. Chatham on Friday, March 3 at 3 p.m. in Davenport, FL.
