ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 3 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Lancaster Bible 90-66 in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament on Saturday night.
The Purple Raiders (27-2) had five players score in double figures with junior
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) leading the way with 22 points. Senior
Jeffery Mansfield (Wilmington) added in 17 points and senior
Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) had a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, with seniors
Braedon Poole (McDonald) and
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) both scoring 12 to round out the Raiders in double figures.
The Chargers (21-8) were led by Jordan Shewbridge who scored a game-high 29 points and Adam Stoltzfus who added in 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Lancaster Bible jumped out to an early 6-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Mount Union would answer with a 13-0 run of their own sparked by three straight Mansfield baskets, that saw them take a 13-6 lead with 14:23 remaining in the first half. The Chargers would come back with a 10-3 run over the next 3:44 of game time to tie the game at 16 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half. About two and a half minutes later a pair of Gurley free throws sparked a massive 22-6 Raider run over the next 5:46 to take a 16-point, 40-24 lead with 1:49 to go in the first half. Lancaster Bible would outscore Mount Union 7-4 over the final 1:38 of the first half giving the Raiders a 44-31 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Chargers cut the lead down to 10 with 14:49 remaining in the game before a jumper from Poole sparked a 13-2 Mount Union run over the next 2:58 to stretch the lead to 65-44 with 11:06 to go. Lancaster Bible wasn't able to get closer than 16 over the final 11 minutes of the game as the Raiders would go on to win 90-66 to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Raiders will play North Park on Friday, March 10 in the Sweet 16 at 7:45 p.m. in Alliance, Ohio..
