Softball: Raiders Complete Comeback in Sweep of BW

BEREA, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 10-0 in six innings and winning game two 10-9.

The Purple Raiders (21-5, 6-2 OAC) struck first in game one when senior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) scored after an error by the Baldwin Wallace center fielder to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Mount Union would add to their lead in the third inning when freshman Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) scored on a throw down to second and then in the top half of the fifth inning Mercer would hit a three-run homerun to left center to make the lead 5-0. The Raiders would add five more runs in the top half of the sixth with RBIs coming from freshman Lydia Brunner (Minerva), freshman Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover), Heath, sophomore Adri George (Eastlake / North) and freshman Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) to extend their lead to 10-0.

The Yellow Jackets (14-12, 4-4 OAC) wouldn't be able to score any runs in the bottom half of the inning, as the Raiders would go on to win 10-0 in six innings.

Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched a complete game shutout giving up just five hits and striking out 11 in the victory.

The Raiders got things started early again in game two, scoring in the top of the first off, an RBI single from George to take a 1-0 lead.

Baldwin Wallace would answer with seven runs in the bottom half of the first inning, with RBIs coming from Sam Smearman, Steph Mraz, Lexy Coggins, Gillian Ryser and Macaira Fox to take a 7-1 lead. Mount Union would cut into the lead in the top of the second inning when freshman Emily Denney (Poland / Poland Seminary) scored off an RBI from Brunner, followed by an RBI single from Reicosky that scored Heath to cut the lead down to 7-3.

The Yellow Jackets would add to their lead in the bottom half of the second scoring off an RBI single from Sara Frederickson to increase their lead to five runs. The Raiders would come back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning, scoring five runs off RBIs from Reicosky, Mercer, George and freshman Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) to tie the game at eight apiece.

Baldwin Wallace would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the fourth scoring off an RBI double from Frederickson to take a 9-8 lead. Mount Union would take their first lead of the game in the top half of the sixth when Kiko hit a two-run homerun to left field to take a 10-8 lead. The Yellow Jackets wouldn't be able to plate a run over the final two innings as the
Raiders would go on to take game two 10-9.

Freshman Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up five runs on four hits before freshman Brooklyn Schlabach (Apple Creek / Waynedale) would come in to pitch two innings of relief, giving up three runs, two earned on five hits and striking out one. Freshman Emmalee Marstellar (Vandalia / Butler) would then come in and throw an inning in relief and gave up zero runs on zero hits. Cahill would come in to pitch the final four innings, giving up one run on three hits and striking out one.

The Raiders hit the road again next as they travel to Columbus for an OAC matchup against Capital on Saturday, April 15, with game one of the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., followed by game two at 3 p.m.
