ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union baseball team swept Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader at home on Sunday.
The Purple Raiders, who were receiving votes in the latest national poll, won game one, 6-2, and game two, 9-3.
In game one, Heidelberg (10-10, 2-2 OAC) struck first with two runs in the first, however, Mount Union (15-5, 3-1 OAC) scored six unanswered runs for the rest of game. Raider senior
John Razzante (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) broke the 2-2 tie with a solo home run to left field. Senior
Eric Schilling (Stow, Ohio / Stow-Munroe Falls) added insurance runs with a two-run triple in the seventh. Junior
Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) improved to 3-1 on the mound with seven innings of work, only giving up two runs off four hits. Sophomore
Chris Phillips (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) earned his second save of the season with two shutout innings.
Mount Union struck first in game two with two runs in the first, however, the Student Princes took the lead with three runs in the second. The Raiders tied it with a run in the third and regained the lead with a run in the fourth when junior
Andrew Witte (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) bunted home sophomore
Alex Stegman (Berea, Ohio / Berea-Midpark). The Raiders never looked back, outscoring Heidelberg 5-0 the rest of the way. Sophomore pitcher
Brady Hansen (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area) earned the win, improving to 4-1 on the year, going seven innings and striking out eight.
Mount will next play at Otterbein in a conference doubleheader on Friday, April 7 with a game one start time of 1 p.m.
