ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Westminster in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday evening, winning game one 8-0 in five innings and winning game two 5-0.
The Purple Raiders (25-7) got started early in game one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning with RBIs coming from freshman
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) and sophomore
Adri George (Eastlake / North). Mount Union would add to their lead in the bottom half of the third when freshman
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Reicosky and freshman
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to make the lead 5-0. The Raiders would add three more runs in the fourth inning with RBIs coming from freshman
Lydia Brunner (Minerva), senior
Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) and Mercer.
The Titans (22-10) wouldn't be able to answer as the Raiders would go on to take game one 8-0.
Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and went the distance giving up zero runs on just two hits and striking out five in the win.
The Raiders would strike first again in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first inning, the first coming when Heath stole home and then Reicosky scored after an error by the Westminster third baseman. Mount Union would add to their lead in the second inning when Brunner hit an RBI triple that scored freshman
Emily Denney (Poland / Poland Seminary) then Brunner scored on an RBI single from Reicosky to make the lead 4-0. The Raiders would add another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when junior
Michaela Folks (Wooster) hit an RBI single that brought home Denney to increase the lead to 5-0.
The Titans wouldn't be able to plate any runs over the final three innings as the Raiders would go on to win game two 5-0.
Freshman
Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and threw a complete game shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out two.
The Raiders hit the road next for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against Wilmington on Saturday, April 22 with game one of the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and game two starting at 3 p.m.
