ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union baseball team swept Wilmington in a home Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader on Sunday.
The Purple Raiders won game one, 8-6, and game two, 14-7.
Mount Union (21-11, 9-5 OAC) took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the fourth inning in game one. Senior
Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) then took over with a home run in back-to-back innings, including a grand slam in the sixth. The grand slam was Mazza's second this season and now has 29 career home runs, extending his school record. Wilmington (13-20, 3-11 OAC) threatened in the ninth with three runs, but was not enough. Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) improved to 5-1 on the season, throwing 8.1 innings, giving up five runs and striking out three.
The Raiders started game two hot, leading 5-0 after two innings, and did not look back to seal the sweep in dominant fashion. Leading the offensive charge was senior
Anthony Kemer (Cleveland, Ohio / Lakewood St. Edward) with four RBIs, including his fourth home run of the year. Senior
Eric Schilling (Stow, Ohio / Stow-Munroe Falls) added three RBIs, including a double. First-year pitcher
Leo Fornara (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) improved to a team-best 6-1 on the season, throwing six innings and giving up two earned runs (three total) off five hits, and striking out two.
The Raiders will next travel to Wooster on Tuesday, April 25 in a single nine-inning game starting at 4 p.m.
