ADA, Ohio—Mount Union's women's volleyball team fell on the road in its Ohio Athletic Conference opener to No. 25 Ohio Northern Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (12-3, 0-1 OAC) lost in straight sets 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 and was led by juniors
Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) and
Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) with eight and seven kills while Meyer picked up five blocks.
Junior
Casey Kildow (Bethesda / Union Local) finished with 14 assists while freshman
Averi Haley (Orrville) finished with a game-high 18 digs.
No. 25 Ohio Northern (11-4, 1-0 OAC) was led by Erin Wagner with 12 kills, Grace Conard finished with 19 assists, and Rachel Jennings had 12 digs.
In the first set Northern jumped out to an 8-2 and 14-3 lead. Mount Union went on a 9-2 run to bring the score within four at 16-12. Mount Union got to within three twice at 18-15 and 19-16 but Northern finished off the set on a 6-1 run taking the set 25-17.
Early in the second set Mount Union got a kill from junior
Darby Leininger and Bartell to take a 3-1 lead. Northern went on a 10-3 run though to take an 11-6 lead midway through the set. Meyer and Bartell brought the Raiders back with two kills each in a run to take a 16-15 lead. Northern finished the set on a 10-1 run to take the set 25-17.
Meyer and Bartell got the Raiders going again with a kill each to take a 2-1 lead in the final set. Mount Union kept the lead at 6-5 but a 10-0 run from Northern gave them a 15-6 lead that they held through the set winning 25-17.
Mount Union stays on the road traveling to Baldwin Wallace for OAC play on Wednesday, October 4th with a 7 PM start time.
