ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's volleyball team won a four-set match (25-22, 25-20, 15-25, and 25-19) to Case Western Reserve, avenging a five-set loss from last season, Wednesday night at the Timken Gymnasium.
Mount Union (3-2) was led by junior outside hitters
Darby Leininger (Chardon / Beaumont) with 11 kills and
Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) with 10 kills.
Freshman setter
Melissa Hansen (Hudson) and junior setter Casey Kildow (Bethesda / Union Local) led the team in assists with 22 and 13 respectively.
Freshman middle blocker Ava Bolen (Wellsburg, W.VA. / Brooke), junior middle blocker Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake), and Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch)
led Mount Union in blocks as Bolen finished with five and Meyer and Mercer had four each.
Freshman libero
Averi Haley (Orrville) led the Purple Raiders in digs with 23 while senior defensive specialist
Adrian Petrisko (Elyria) and
Kildow each had double digit digs with 11 and 10.
Case Western Reserve (4-1), who is receiving votes in the most recent coaches top 25 poll, was led by Jennifer Ngo with 18 kills, Carly Scott had 25 assists, and Alyssa Blessinger with 26 digs.
In the first set, Case Western and Mount Union battled back-and-forth until Mount Union went on a 4-point run making the score 7-3 with
Meyer having two aces. Case Western battled back in the set taking the lead with a 6-point run to take the lead 18-14. Mount Union finished the first set on an 11-4 run to win the set 25-22.
For the second set Case Western and Mount Union once again got out back-and-forth start. Mount Union was able to take the lead 10-5 with a block from
Leininger and
Meyer. Mount Union lengthened its lead out to 19-9 on a 6-0 run including two kills from
Bolen. The Raiders finished out the set winning 25-20.
Case Western came out on fire leading the third set 10-5. Case Western kept the lead throughout the third set finishing off the set winning 25-15.
Mount Union and Case Western battled for the lead in the fourth set with Mount getting a 9-5 lead with a 3-0 run where
Leininger started it with a kill. Case Western was able to battle back, but Mount Union went on an 8-2 run extending their lead to 17-11 with sophomore right side hitter Mercer leading the run with three kills. Mount Union was able to finish off the fourth set 25-19 with a kill by
Myer from freshman
Hansen.
The Raiders will travel to Cleveland, Ohio this Saturday taking on Averett University at 10 am and the second game will take place against Defiance College at 12 pm on the campus of Case Western Reserve University.
