Football: #3 Mount Union Blanks Capital, 54-0

BEXLEY, Ohio – No. 3 Mount Union shut out Capital, 54-0, in a road Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) contest in a picturesque Fall day in the state capital Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders were just a yard short of having two 100-yard rushers as senior Tyler Echeverry (Naples, FL/Barron Collier) ran for 140 yards (14.0 avg.) and a touchdown and classmate Darnell Williams (Cleveland, OH/John Adams) ran for 99 yards (14.1 avg.) and two touchdowns. Echeverry, who came in leading the OAC in rushing touchdowns, has now run for over 100 yards in three-straight games (six total for his career).

Sophomore Ivan Maric (Falls Church, VA/Mclean) made a 51-yard field goal, breaking the school record for the longest FG in a game. Previously there was a four-way tie in first at 47 yards.

Junior QB Noah Beaudrie (Monroe, MI/Erie-Mason) went 11 of 15 for 124 yards and a touchdown, to go along with 60 yards on the ground.

It took less than two minutes into the game for Mount Union (8-0, 7-0 OAC) to find pay dirt as Beaudrie connected with classmate Nick Turner (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) for a 49-yard touchdown in the game's opening drive.

Senior LB Marcus Jackson (Dallas, TX/Richardson ) had a safety sack, followed by back-to-back 25+ touchdown runs by Williams and the Purple Raiders led 23-0 at halftime.

Echeverry ran it in from 52 yards out to start the second half scoring. Graduate QB TJ Deshields (Beloit, OH/West Branch) added a touchdown through the air and on the ground. Senior Tre Radford (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) caught the touchdown pass from Deshields.

Mount's defense, earning its second shutout of the season, caused four turnovers on the day, to go along with six sacks and the safety. Seniors CB Tony Cook (Detroit, MI/Woodhaven) and LB Jazz Jackson (Wadsworth, OH/Wadsworth) both had an interception. It marked Cook's second-straight game with an INT and Jackson's first of his career. Jackson tied with sophomore bandit Corey Gibson (Akron, OH/Barberton) for a game-high eight tackles – career-highs for both. Gibson added a fumble return for a touchdown, the first of his career. Capital (0-8, 0-7 OAC) was only able to muster 71 yards on the ground.

Mount Union will next host the Marietta Pioneers, who are also undefeated, for an OAC showdown for the Raiders' home regular season finale at Kehres Stadium next Saturday, Nov. 9. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
