UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated no. 24 nationally ranked John Carroll 93-82 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (4-2, 1-0 OAC) had four players score in double figures with sophomore
Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) leading the way with a career-high 21 points and he also grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to record his first career double-double. Junior
Kevin Moore (Youngstown / Campbell Memorial) scored a season-high 20 points, with senior
Jamarr Talbert Jr. (Richmond Heights / Richmond Heights) adding in 13 points and junior
Corey Hudson (Columbus / Pickerington) scoring 10 to round out the Raiders in double digits.
The Blue Streaks (3-3, 0-1 OAC) were led by Luke Frazier who scored a game-high 33 points, David Gentry who scored 12 and Henry Raynor who added in 10 points.
Both teams would trade baskets over the first four minutes of action before a three from graduate student
Jonah McCartney (North Canton / Hoover) sparked a 12-3 Raider run over the next 3:50 of game time to take a 22-13 lead with 11:33 left to play in the first half. Mount Union would maintain that lead over the next several minutes and then with seven and a half minutes remaining in the half went on a quick 7-3 run to stretch the lead to 13 with just under six minutes remaining.
However, the Blue Streaks would answer with a 12-4 run of their own over the next 3:56 of action to cut the lead to 42-37 with 1:38 left in the half. The teams would trade baskets over the final minute and a half, giving the Raiders a six-point 47-41 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Blue Streaks opened the second half with a 9-1 run to take a two-point lead with 17 minutes left to play in the game. A little over two minutes later the Raiders would answer with an 8-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead with thirteen and a half minutes remaining in the game. However, John Carroll would come storming back once again, cutting the lead back down to just a point at 67-66 with 10:13 left in the game. Then, with 8:44 remaining in the game Mount Union would go on a massive 21-7 run over the next five and a half minutes to take a 15-point lead with just over three minutes remaining. The closest the Blue Streaks would be able to get over the final three minutes was 11 as the Raiders would go on to win 93-82.
The Raiders return home next when they host Capital in an OAC matchup on Saturday, December 7 at 3 p.m. in McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
