ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's basketball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against Marietta College 81-56 on Wednesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (9-15, 6-11 OAC) were led by freshman
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) with 11 points and 6 rebounds, freshman
Abby Muckleroy (Canfield) with 7 rebounds, and sophomore
Mckayla Dunkle (Cadiz / Harrison Central) with 3 steals.
The Marietta Pioneers (19-5, 14-3 OAC) were led by Paige Tolson with 22 points, Hannah Schill with 9 rebounds, and Olivia Gribble with 3 steals.
FIRST QUARTER
The Raiders the Pioneers battled back and forth getting some baskets, until the Pioneers were able to break the tie going on a 9-2 scoring run to take the lead 13-6 with five minutes remaining. The Pioneers continued to dominate going on a 7-0 scoring run to extend their lead 20-6. The Raiders, however, were not letting up and continued to battle it out going on an 8-4 scoring run to end out the quarter with the Pioneers still in the lead 24-14.
SECOND QUARTER
Both teams came out strong in this quarter with back-to-back three pointers to set the tone for this quarter. Marietta was able to go on a 5-0 scoring run early to keep their lead 32-17. Mount Union was quick to respond by going on an 8-3 scoring run to close the score a little bit, 35-25 with Marietta still in the lead. Both teams got points on the board until Marietta was able to break it in the 10-8 scoring run to end the quarter 45-33 going into halftime with Mount Union still trailing.
THIRD QUARTER
The Pioneers came out strong this quarter going on a 7-4 scoring run against the Purple Raiders to make the score 52-37. The Purple Raiders were not going to back down, going on a 6-4 scoring run to make a slight come back and make the score 56-43 with the Pioneers still leading the game. The Pioneers were able to end the quarter on a 10-4 scoring run keeping their lead going into the final quarter 66-47.
FOURTH QUARTER
Marietta continued to hold their lead by going on a 10-3 scoring run, making the score 76-50 with 7 minutes remaining in the match. Mount Union was determined to stay in the matchup, by going on a 6-1 scoring run with Marietta still leading 78-56. Marietta was able to finish the game off by holding their lead 81-56
The Raiders will travel to Westerville, Ohio to take on Otterbein in an OAC matchup on Saturday with a 1 PM tip-off with the winner of the game taking the sixth and final seed in the OAC Tournament.
