ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Penn State-Behrend in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 10-1 in five innings and winning game two 3-2.
The Purple Raiders (12-1) struck first in game one, when they put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the first came off an RBI from junior
Adri George (Eastlake / North) and then the next two came from a two RBI double from sophomore
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) to take a 3-0 lead. Mount Union would add to their lead in the bottom half of the second with three more runs this time RBIs came from sophomore
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch), freshman
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) and sophomore
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison).
The Lions (6-6) would answer with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning when Jocelyn McNany hit a solo homerun to left field to cut the lead down to five runs. The Raiders would answer again however, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Mercer got it started with a solo home run to right center, followed by an RBI double from George, then an RBI single from junior
Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) and capped off by an RBI double from Kiko to extend the lead to 10-1.
Behrend wouldn't have an answer in the fifth inning and the Raiders would go on to win game one 10-1 in five innings.
Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up one run on four hits while striking out five in four innings of work. Freshman
Emma Reese (Alliance) would come in to pitch the final inning in relief and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out one.
The Lions would strike first in game two when Maria Jones hit an RBI double in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. They would then add to that lead in the fourth inning when Meghan Petitte drove in a run to extend the lead to two runs.
The Raiders would answer in the bottom half of the fifth when Hahn laid down a bunt that scored sophomore
Emily Denney (Poland / Poland Seminary) and then Cahill hit an RBI triple down the right field line to bring in Hahn and sophomore
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) to give Mount Union their first lead of the game at 3-2. Penn State-Behrend wouldn't have an answer over the final two innings as the Raiders would go on to win 3-2.
Sophomore
Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in game two for Mount Union and got the complete game win giving up just two runs on four hits and striking out four.
The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Delaware, Ohio for a doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 20, with game one beginning at 3:30 p.m. and game two at 5:30 p.m.
