KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games on the fourth day of their Spring Break trip, beating DeSales 4-0 and losing to No. 1 nationally ranked Trine 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (6-1) struck first when sophomore
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) hit an RBI single down the right field line that scored junior
Adri George (Eastlake / North) to take a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first. Then, in the top of the third inning George hit an RBI single up the middle that brought home sophomore
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to extend the lead to two runs. George would help Mount Union add to that lead again in the fifth inning with another RBI single that scored freshman
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) to make the lead 3-0. Then, in the top half of the seventh Hahn laid down a bunt that brought in Mercer and made the lead 4-0.
The Bulldogs (4-1) wouldn't have an answer in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Raiders would go on to win 4-0.
Cahill got the start in the circle and picked up her third win of the season in a complete game shutout, where she only gave up three hits and struck out four.
The Thunder (6-1) would strike first in the second game of the day, scoring in the top of the first inning off an RBI from Macy Rocha to take a 1-0 lead. The Raiders would answer in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) laid down a bunt and then sophomore
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) scored on a throwing error by the third baseman to tie the game at one.
Trine would reclaim the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring five runs with RBIs coming from Emma Lee, Ellie Trine, Karley Trine and then Trine and Ainsley Phillips scored on a wild pitch to take a 6-1 lead. The Thunder would add three more runs to their lead in the top half of the fifth with RBIs coming from Scarlett Elliott and Phillips to extend the lead to 9-1.
Mount Union would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Hahn hit an RBI single down the left field line and Mercer scored to cut the lead down to seven runs, however that's as close as the Raiders would get as Trine would go on to win 9-2.
Sophomore
Brooklyn Schlabach (Apple Creek / Waynedale) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up four runs on three hits and struck out one in 3.2 innings of work. Freshman
Emma Reese (Alliance) would come in in relief and gave up two runs, one earned on two hits, sophomore
Emmalee Marstellar (Vandalia / Butler) came in and threw an inning in relief and gave up three runs on two hits and struck out one. Freshman
Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) came in to pitch the final 2.1 innings and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out one.
The Raiders return to action again tomorrow with another pair of games, taking on Chatham at 11:15 a.m. and taking on Alvernia at 1:30 p.m. in Kissimmee, Fla.
