BEREA, Ohio – The Mount Union baseball team, who was receiving national votes, lost both games to No. 3-ranked Baldwin Wallace on the road in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader on Wednesday.
Mount Union (17-8, 4-4 OAC) tied the game, 4-4, in game one in the sixth inning after senior
Andrew Witte (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) brought home graduate
Eric Schilling (Stow, Ohio / Stow-Munroe Falls). Baldwin Wallace (22-4, 7-1 OAC), however, scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings for the 6-4 win. The Purple Raiders out-hit the Yellow Jackets, 11-10, led by Witte and Schilling who each had three hits. 17 Mount Union runners left on base proved costly. Senior
Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) moved to 1-1, after pitching 5.1 innings and giving up five runs off seven hits and striking out three.
In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets pulled away with three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. BW went on to win 11-4. Senior
Logan Bell (Alliance, Ohio / Alliance) and junior
Alex Stegman (Berea, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) both had two RBIs. Freshman pitcher
Chase Mayer (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) (0-1) threw for 3.0 innings, giving up five runs off eight hits, while walking and striking out two.
Mount Union is next scheduled to play at OAC foe Capital in a doubleheader, Saturday, April 13 with game one starting at 1 p.m.
