Men's Volleyball: Raiders Fall in MCVL Tournament Semifinals

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—The Mount Union men's volleyball team fell in four set, 17-25, 25-22, 25-27 and 17-25, in the semifinals of the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League tournament to Wittenberg Friday night.
 
The Purple Raiders (13-10) were led by Jack McClure (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) and Aaron Armour (Waukesha, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) with 13 and nine kills respectively.
 
Will Heeney (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) led Mount Union with 28 assists while Peyton Koszelak (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) finished with a team-high 12 digs while Heeney finished with 10 digs.
 
Wittenberg (19-8) was led by Michael Yurk with 23 kills, Sam Richardson with 26 assists and Tom Supan with 15 digs.
 
SET ONE
Mount Union got the first point of the match off a Wittenberg error. Wittenberg got the lead at 4-3 but Mount Union tied the game back up at four. Wittenberg then went on a 5-1 run to take a 9-5 lead, but Mount Union responded getting within two at 11-9. Wittenberg pushed its lead out to 18-11 thanks to a 7-2 run which Mount Union could not recover from dropping the set 25-17.
 
SET TWO
Mount Union got off to a 3-1 lead with a kill from Armour starting the set. Both teams then traded points back and forth until a 3-0 run for Wittenberg and a 4-0 run from Mount Union as the Raiders led 9-6. Both teams kept trading points until a 3-1 run from Mount Union with a kill from McClure and Camden Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz. / Agua Fria) pushing the lead out to 17-14. Wittenberg got within one point at 18-17 but Mount Union used a 4-1 run to get a lead of 22-18 and won the set 25-22. Mount Union finished the set having 17 kills with just three errors on 30 attempts for a .467 hitting percentage.
 
SET THREE
Both teams traded points up to four, but a 6-0 run fueled by Heeney's serving gave Mount Union a 10-4 lead. Wittenberg battled Mount Union back to a 13 tie, but Mount Union went on a 5-1 run to go up 18-14. Wittenberg came all the way back and took a 20-19 lead once again Mount Union went on a run this time 3-0 to take a 22-20 lead. From here neither team got a lead larger than two as the teams were tied at 22 through point 25. Wittenberg however got the final two points to take set three 27-25.
 
SET FOUR
Mount Union got off to a good start with a 3-1 lead. Wittenberg used a 5-1 run later in the set to take an 8-6 lead. Wittenberg used a 6-1 run later in the set to lead 14-8. Mount Union got within four at 15-11 but Wittenberg held the lead the rest of the set taking it 25-17.
 
Mount Union will end its season at 13-10 overall and 7-2 in the MCVL.
