WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Mount Union baseball team split its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader at Wilmington on Saturday.
The Purple Raiders (22-10, 8-6 OAC) lost game one, 4-3, from a walk-off, however regrouped and won convincingly, 10-3, in game two.
Mount was down 2-1 going into the eighth inning, however, took a 3-2 lead off a two-run single by
Andrew Witte (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) in the top of the eighth. Wilmington (4-25, 2-12 OAC) tied it in the bottom of the eighth, followed with a walk-off walk with the bases loaded in the ninth. Junior
Chris Phillips (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) got the loss coming in for relief. Senior
Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) started and pitched 8.0 innings with only one earned run (three total) and had seven strikeouts in the no decision.
In the nightcap, the Raiders jumped out to a 3-2 lead through two innings. Wilmington cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. The 3-2 Raider lead would stand until the final two innings when Mount Union outscored the Quakers 7-1. Seven different Raiders had an RBI, led by freshman
Luke Ickes (Green, Ohio / Green) who had a two-run double in the ninth. Junior
Brady Hansen (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area) continued his dominance on the mound, improving to 7-0, with 5.2 innings of work, only allowing two runs off four hits and striking out 10. Sophomore
Ryan Romito (North Ridgeville, Ohio / North Ridgeville) earned the save, only allowing one run off five hits (and striking out two) in 3.1 innings of work in relief.
Mount Union will next compete at Thiel tomorrow, April 21 at 1 p.m.
