Softball: Raiders Extend Win Streak to 10 in Sweep of Wilmington

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 9-4 and winning game two 7-2.

The Purple Raiders (25-4, 10-0 OAC) struck first in game one with a two run first inning, the first coming off an RBI single from junior Adri George (Eastlake / North) and the second coming off an RBI single from sophomore Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) to take a 2-0 lead. Mount Union would add to their lead in the third inning when Cahill hit a two-run homerun to stretch the lead to four runs.

The Quakers (15-18-1, 3-11 OAC) would answer with three runs of their own in the top half of the fourth with RBIs coming from Claire Scully and Alasandra Spears to cut the lead down to a run. The Raiders would push the lead back out to three runs in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs off RBIs from sophomore Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) and sophomore Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to stretch the lead back to 6-3.

Mount Union would add three more runs in the fifth inning, the first coming after freshman Lilja Reynolds (Upper Arlington) scored on an overthrow by the Quaker shortstop. Then, sophomore Lydia Brunner (Minerva) scored after Culver got caught in a run down, then finally Culver scored after an overthrow by the catcher as she stole third to stretch the lead out to six runs. Wilmington would answer with a run in the top of the seventh when Chloe Dorn hit an RBI double, however they wouldn't be able to get any closer as the Raiders would go on to take game one 9-4.

Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and got the complete game win, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out nine.

The Raiders would strike first again in game two when Cahill hit an RBI that brought in Mercer in the bottom half of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Then, in the second inning Brunner stole home to stretch the lead to two runs.

The Quakers would answer with a run of their own on the fourth inning when Spears hit an RBI single to trim the lead down to a run. However, Mount Union would answer with a massive five run fifth inning with RBIs coming from George, Brunner and sophomore Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) and Brunner and sophomore Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) both scored on errors by the Wilmington catcher to make the lead 7-1.

Wilmington would answer with a run in the top of the seventh, scoring of a Spears solo homerun but they wouldn't be able to get any closer as the Raiders would go on to take game two 7-2.

Sophomore Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game two and also got a complete game win, giving up just two runs on seven hits and striking out five.

The Raiders are back home again on Monday, April 22 when they host Capital in an OAC matchup with games beginning at 3 and 5 p.m. at the 23rd Street Softball Field in Alliance.
