ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's basketball team came up just short of an upset over No. 12 Baldwin Wallace dropping the Ohio Athletic Conference game 46-45 on Wednesday night.
The Purple Raiders (6-8, 1-6 OAC) were led by
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) with 14 points and nine rebounds.
No. 12 Baldwin Wallace () was led by Bella Vaillant with 13 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring double digits was Emily Irwin with 10 points.
Mount Union held Baldwin Wallace scoreless for the first 9:30 of the game while scoring 10 points with four different Raiders. Baldwin Wallace got a three to end the quarter as Mount Union had a 10-3 lead.
Baldwin Wallace started the second quarter on a 6-0 run but was stopped by an
Ali Hudik (Mentor / Lake Catholic) jumper as Mount Union had a 12-9 lead. Baldwin Wallace tied it up at 12 but a jumper from
Chelsea Evanich (Alliance / Marlington) once again gave the Raiders the lead. Both teams went back and forth with the halftime score being tied at 18.
Dae Dae Nash (Akron / Buchtel) started the third quarter on a 5-0 run by herself to get Mount Union a 23-18 lead. Baldwin Wallace battled back to tie the game at 27 and then took a 30-27 lead. A jumper from Nash and then four straight points from
Tess Conroy (Valley View / Cuyahoga Heights) gave Mount Union a 33-30 lead. Four free throws from Baldwin Wallace and a free throw from Mason tied the game up at 34 going into the final quarter.
Once again, a 5-0 run this time by Mason to start the quarter gave Mount Union a 39-34 lead. Baldwin Wallace tied the game up at 39 but a bucket from Nash and Evanich pushed the lead out to 43-39. Baldwin Wallace grabbed the lead on a 6-0 run with 1:44 remaining. Mount Union tied the game on a basket from Mason with 1:35 but a free throw from Baldwin Wallace with seven seconds ended the game.
Mount Union heads on the road on Saturday to take on Ohio Northern at 1 PM in OAC play.
