COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Capital 66-64 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (12-5, 9-1 OAC) had two players score in double figures with sophomore
Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) leading the way with a team-high 16 points. Fifth-year
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) added in 15 points to round out the Raiders in double digits.
The Comets (6-11, 3-7 OAC) were led by McKane Finkenbine who scored a game-high 23 points and Justin Nixon who added in 19 points.
Mount Union would jump out to an early 11-3 lead just over three minutes into the game, before Capital would go on a quick 9-4 run to cut the lead down to three with 14:11 remaining in the first half. The Raiders would then answer with a 12-4 run of their own over the next 8:04 to push the lead out to 11 with just 6:07 left to play in the first half. The Comets and Raiders would go on to trade baskets over the final six minutes of the half as Mount Union would take a 39-28 lead into the halftime break.
Capital would open the second half with a 15-3 run over the first 4:45 of the half to take a 43-42 lead with just over fifteen minutes left in the game. Mount Union would answer with a 10-4 run of their own over the next 4:46 of game time to reclaim a 52-47 lead with nine and a half minutes remaining in the game. The Raiders would maintain their lead over the next several minutes before the Comets would go on a 9-0 run over 2:57 of action to take a 64-60 lead with 1:39 left to play. Mount Union would close the game on a 6-0 run, including the game winning shot made by Parker with just 5.4 seconds left in the game, followed by a game sealing block by sophomore
Deshaun Vaden (Willoughby / Cornerstone Christian) with just two seconds left in the game to give the Raiders the 66-64 victory.
The Raiders are on the road again next when they travel to Marietta on Wednesday, January 29 for an OAC matchup with the Pioneers at 7 p.m.
