CINCINNATI, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Transylvania 88-66 at the Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic on Saturday evening.
The Purple Raiders (5-0) had four players score in double figures with senior
Kevin Moore (Youngstown / Campbell Memorial) and junior
Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) leading the way with a game-high 22 points apiece. Junior
Kevin Hamilton (Akron / St. Vincent St. Mary) and sophomore
Chance Casenhiser (Uniontown / Lake) added 15 and 12 points respectively to round out the Raiders in double digits.
The Pioneers (1-2) were led by Hunter Barr who scored a team-high 20 points while Ian Reesor and Drew Marshall scored 17 and 10 points respectively.
Mount Union would jump out to an early 9-4 lead just over three minutes into the game before Transylvania would go on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes of action to take a 14-9 lead with 14:50 to play in the first half. Both teams would go back and forth trading baskets over the next 7:16 of game time, a period that saw two ties and five lead changes. The Raiders would then go on a 19-8 run over the final 6:12 of the half to take a 10-point 48-38 lead into the halftime break.
The Raiders and the Pioneers would go back and forth for a majority of the second half with neither team able to gain much of an advantage. During this period the Mount Union lead never grew greater than 14, however Transylvania never got closer than six. Leading 73-63 with 5:15 remaining in the game, the Raiders would go on a 15-1 run over the next 4:51 of game time to take their largest lead of the game at 24 points before going on to win 88-66.
The Raiders will take on Mount St. Joseph tomorrow in the final day of the Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic at 2 p.m. in Cincinnati.
