Football: Mount Union Wins 33rd-Straight NCAA Playoffs Opening Game

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union Purple Raiders scored a touchdown on their first seven drives on their way to a dominant 49-7 win over the visiting Muhlenberg Mules in the Second Round of the 2025 NCAA Championship Playoffs on Saturday at Kehres Stadium.

Redshirt-freshman QB Mikey Maloney (Concord Township, OH/Painesville Riverside) totaled a career-high six touchdowns, including a career-high three rushing scores. Maloney went 22 of 25 (88%) with three touchdowns and threw for over 300 yards for the third time of his career.

Junior WR Davion Grant (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) registered his third straight 100-yard receiving game (fourth overall of the season) with 140 yards off eight catches and two touchdowns—his third multi-touchdown game in 2025. Grant now has a team-high eight receiving touchdowns.

Graduate RB Darnell Williams (Cleveland, OH/John Adams) ran for over 100 yards for the fifth time this season with 130 on the ground, with a 9.3 avg. Senior Shaun Thomas (Lima, OH/Lima Central Catholic) added a touchdown run with 51 yards total on the ground (5.7 avg.). Senior WR Nick Turner (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) had seven catches for 94 yards and a score.

Senior DB Kosta Thrasivoulou (North Ridgeville, OH/North Ridgeville) pocketed his team-high fourth interception of the season. Senior Kaleb Brown (La Plata, MD/La Plata) registered his 29th career sack, good for fifth all-time in program history.

Mount Union outgained Muhlenberg, 530-203 in total yards, including 225-91 on the ground.

The Purple Raiders improved to 11-0 overall, while the Mules finished the season 9-3. Mount has now won 33 straight NCAA opening games. 

Mount Union will host former Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe John Carroll next Saturday, Dec. 6, in the NCAA Third Round with a 12:02 PM kickoff on ESPN+.
